Mechanical Ant

Hi there!

Finally did some 3D modelling worth to show here:

Click on the image for a slightly larger version.

Blender for modelling and stuff, rendered with Yafray, no post-pro yet.

I’m still planning to rig the thing, give it a lively pose and set it into some scenery. But that will have to wait a bit.
So I’ll call it finished for now. C&c very welcome.

Nice model Wah_tak.

In my opinion, there’s nothing left to model.
Any plans on how the final model will look?

Damn, this ant is great !
I like a lot the fact that you kept a very mechanical shape for it, and that it still looks like an ant.
Just… perfect…

That is really cool looking. Perhaps some kind of spy device? I don’t know. Anyways, I can’t wait to see it posed with a good material and scene.

Looks really cool! :stuck_out_tongue:
Maybe you make an anim with it walking?

Way cool!

I particularly like the way the legs intersect the thorax. I would make the upper-leg (the long, horizontalish parts) just a bit thicker in the up/down direction though…

I like the curve of the abdomen, but the straight cube poking out the back ruins it for me. Give it a bit of a taper to the tail too (much like the “beak” at the head tapers) and it would be perfect IMHO.

Can’t wait to see it textured!

nothing to crit, great modeling.
texturize it

The connection between the anal section and the abdomen looks week and seems to break the flow of the hull a bit.

Otherwise very nice. A bit noisy though, could do without the DoF too.

Keep it up!

I think it’d be sweet if you made like a mound and a whole crapload of em just walkin’ around, pickin’ up stuff.

Hmm, yes, maybe making a second one in the background with a screw or bolt between its pincers, or whatever you call them, i am no ant expert

Nice work though :stuck_out_tongue:

cool, maybe a 1240x1024 render for a desktop please?

Very stylish.
I like the use shallow DOF cause ants are small. You should rigged it when they do the animation re-write.

Even if it is simple the model is great. Good job on this one

very good shape idea!
nice modell!

yep really cool stuff
I like it

Thanks for all your replies!

Thanks. Thats just what i was aiming for. I used reference images of real ants and had to restart modelling once or twice, because it looked too biological, too much like the references.

Sorry, don’t think so. Too much work for now, and as I still have to learn all that animation stuff in Blender, I’ll start with a thing with less legs

Thanks, I’ll still have to think about the abdomen part, but I’ll do something about the back leg. It really looks too fragile.

Ah yes, good point. I’ll add a few tubes and cables so to make it at least visually thicker.
And i’ll try to get rid of the noise when I’ve got time for a really long render with heaps of AA passes and samples.
I rather like of the DoF effect, it’s only the quality of it in YafRay that bothers me (I’t needs a lot of AA to make it look good).

Thanks to all for your compliments!
It’s nice to have so many replies.

I’ll let that project rest for a while first, and when I come back to it, I’ll add some details, put on some brushed metal texture, pose it in a scene and render it BIG

I like the DOF. It sort of emphasises the fact thats it’s supposed to be small.

Excelle-ant image though. Really like it.

I love it! not to wreck the mechanical shape of it or anything, but how does it look with subsurf on? (though i bet i looks cooler this way.)

but how does it look with subsurf on?

Subsurf is on. The edges are just beveled a very little bit, so that subsurf produces those sharp corners that still have good looking speculars.

That beveling makes selecting the seams and UV mapping rather tedious though.
