Mechanical Arm animation example in Help not possible to implement in 2.6

I cannot implement either the “Old parenting method” or “New Constraint Method” of the mecanical arm animation example in this help page:
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.4/Manual/Rigging/Skinning/Objects

Im using 2.6 and a lot of the 2.4 documentation doesnt seem to apply but sometimes thats all there is. (I never have found the “Buttons” panel in 2.6 but that should be another post maybe)

PROBLEM: I cannot select the mesh when in Pose mode and the bone is seleced. To select the mesh in order to link it to the bone will pop out of Pose mode, and when I hit CTRL P in order to set the Parent like in the example all I get is Object. Where is there a simple way to set it.

ALSO: When I try the new constraints method, I cannot see where to add a Child Constraint in the Object/Constraint menu. When I add a Copy Location constraint, there is no way to link it to the bone.

Did they purposefully remove non-skinned animation support from 2.6?
How do I implement the linking of mesh objects to bones in 2.6?

Get armature in pose mode, select object (which will switch you to object mode), then SHIFT select the bone you want to parent that object to (which will switch you back into pose mode), then Ctrl-P for the parenting popup menu. To Bone is at the bottom of that menu.

That’s how parenting anything works in Blender. Select child object (and shift select more child objects) then shift select the parent last, then Alt-P. That’s the shortcut way. It can be done manually in the properties panels.

Btw that’s a fundamental of Blender. Selected and Active is not necessarily the same thing. The last object (or face, bone, whatever) selected is the Active object.

Child Of constraint on the object: Select object then Properties window (what used to be called the Buttons panel) > Object Constraints > Add Constraint. Select ChildOf constraint then in its panel enter Target: Armature (or whatever you named your armature object) and a bone box will appear below that where you enter the name of the bone.

That’s a very confusing tutorial if you are a beginner Blender rigger. All Blender tutorials are tedious and technical and the number one tip is to go back through step by step when you run into problems. One little missed step or setting can make or break it. But very important details have been left out of that wiki tut which makes it almost impossible to get through unless you already know your way around Blender.
