Is it clear yet what “free until the end of 2024” means?
Does it mean that I claim them now and can use them for free until the end of 2024?
Or does it mean that I have time to claim them until the end of 2024 and can then use them for free forever?

Yes, you can claim now and use after 2024. They will be linked with your profile. I have checked with Epic Games forums as well. But claiming should be done before Jan 1 2025.
Anything that is added new later in 2025 will not be free and these same assets will not free as well.
