merge, attach - whatever..

Hello again,
once again I’m searching a function a Blender called “attach” in 3dsMax or “merge” in Softimage.
I have two boxes that dont touch each other and I would like to turn them in to one object without bridging them.
Is there such a function or do I just use the boolean union?
