merging 2 objects into 1 (a leg to a body)

Hello,
I am a noob to blender, and I need help merging the leg to the body. I tried to Ctrl + J, but it leaves the unnecessary geometry inside the body. And also it doesn’t connect the vertexes.
Is there a better way to merge the objects?
Or is it even necessary to merge them for future animation?

Ctrl+J simply just add joins multiple objects into one, no changes the mesh, no merging, no fancy editing.

You can join them followed by deleting vertices and refilling gaps with faces
You could use the boolean modifier or the intersect tool followed by a cleanup of the resulting mesh If you want to animate it then you will need the correct to give the deformation you require (search youtube for examples)

Or is it even necessary to merge them for future animation?
Depends on the look you want to achieve, it’s not required.

I used the boolean modifier with the Union operation, I got what I wanted. So thank you very much!
and about the animation, I will work it out later. I didn’t start learning the animation process yet.

Thank again, you really helped!
