Mermaid

For the past few days, i’v been thinking a lot about mermaids. So I figured, why not bring the imagination to life? I did a lot of experimenting and I decided that my machine isn’t fast enough for cycles, so I used blender render. I never consider any of my art to be complete, so I’m posting it as a WIP. Although it’s very possible that I may be reluctant to add anything to the scene, cos even with blender render, it takes hours to render.

I’ve been using blender for about a year now, but this is my 1st post on BA. I prefer to just hang up my work on facebook http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10200474741179001.2204773.1471288698&type=1&l=167ec0ca6b

after breezing thru other threads, it seems to me like it’s standard to post clay renders, so here’s this

mermaids r mammals, so i believe their tails should be more like dolphin tails rather than fish tails. the difference? besides the obvious color difference, dolphins dont have scales; their tails move up and down (not side to side as in a shark for example). this means the tails r dorso-ventrally flattened, not laterally flattened.
but then again, they r imaginary creatures  anything goes

The tail fin is way to rigid at the bottom , definitely need to shape that to appear less straight . Otherwise looks good for 1 year experience in modelling

thanks…i could never have noticed that on my own. i looked at some more reference images of dolphin tails, orca tails, etc.

i updated the tail. in the end, i had to sculpt :frowning: something i usually avoid as much as possible

it’s rendering now…so i should upload the updated version tomorrow
by the way, a year is a looooooooong time. i should be better than just “good”

  • cool I will look out for the update.

I take it the model is not rigged then , Do you have any experience using curves? If the model is indeed static you could have done some easy deforms with one or two curves and vertice grouping then apply etc

it looked good before the render, but now :frowning:
i turned off all reflections and transparency

i think i’ll just remodel the tail fin…sculpting doesnt do it for me

she had a basic rig. but after posing her, i applied the armature modifier and deleted the rig…i have very little experience with curves. i’v only used them on looooong meshes and walk paths, but i’ll give it a try

I think the tail looks better if it is smaller. I like your reasoning about the tail being based on a dolphin rather than fish, since a mermaid is a mammal .

i kinda have to agree with u on that, sunnyfield. the tail looks much better after i shrunk it down

again, i rendered without reflections, sss or transparency.
