Mesh is untouchable when I go into Edit mode

Why does my mesh become untouchable when I go into Edit mode?

The untouchable mesh goes into a light grey wire frame.

Found a solution.

1. Put all geometry into a collection.
2. Create a new clean scene.
3. Append the geometry in the collection from the old scene into the new scene.
4. Now geometry can be edited in new scene in Edit Mode.
