Mesh Origins

Afternoon all…

I have a beginners question. How do you guys figure out how to start your models? I mean, I have plenty of ideas on what to model, and I’ve run more than a few tutorials- But I can’t figure out how to start out. Whenever I create something on my own, I always end up starting with the incorrect base mesh (Cube / Uv Sphere / etc), and don’t realise until I’m already commited, and the model never turns out like I want.

So, does this just come through experience, or am I looking at the wrong thing? I always think “…ah…House…lets start with a cube”. Or should be “ahh…house…lets start with plane, and extract up into walls etc”

Any ideas?

One mesh is not useful only for one model. You can base your project on a general shape (like you said, cube for house, or rather, I think, a plane to extrude). Moreover, you can still add a mesh to your current model to make it better if you think the first one was not good enough. Blender doesn’t have many limits about this.

I began my first model by extruding a vertical plane. Wasn’t good, so I added and extruded other meshes that I bound to the original model. I never had to delete the whole model. I just adapted my ideas to it.
