metaball and halo material

I added halo material to meta object but Blender renders as solid. Is it somehow possible to render metaball as halo without converting it to mesh?

Halo materials render vertices. Meta objects are surfaces so don’t have vertices, therefore you won’t see the same effect as with a mesh object.

But it still has something like virtual vertices. As I see, metaobject is automatically converted to mesh before rendering, based on its resolution. Im looking some solution to render electron cloud of molecules.

Since you seem to think it is so straightforward what is your solution in using these so called virtual vertices that only appear at render time ? Maybe there isn’t one and meta objects just can’t at this time use halo materials. You’d have to find another solution.
