After seeing Dittoheads compass, i decided to make a metal “shader” of my own. If there is some interest, ill post a .blend.

no crits from me! looks gorgeous! [!]
Very nice!!
I’d suggest altering the color of the gold/brass one a tad so that it’s not quite so greenish. One the hardest to mimick materials is metal; gold specifically.
Well done. Glad to be of service.
i always liked metallics, but always had trouble with them.
Im horrible with textures and especially with “skins” i dont know the first thing to do. I like how this turned out, i would love to have a look at it, so if you want, please post the .blend
the steel looks good, any chance of a .blend ?
I’m not convinced… what are these objects meant to be or the type of metal you’re going for? they look like empty shells to me
i reckon a specularity map would make this look way better eh
im sorry, but i must agree, sorry dante, but i dont really think they look THAT good, (mind you, i couldnt do any better)
I think the “golden” one would be very good for an old brass instrument. Good work
those look nice! I wouldn’t mind it if you posted the .blend file. I don’t know much about Blender materials yet and I need to learn for a current project I am working on. Thanks.

Thanks to all who replied
These objects are just that. They are only meant to be things to place my Material tests on.
In regards to the gold, I hardly spent any time on that one Its basicly a tweak of the other mat.
I agree that they dont look THAT good skeletor. Thats why I posted them here…for crits %|
I’ll post a blend later today, but I want to try a few things out first

Ok. First an update:
Messed with the specs and the gold color. Hardly noticable changes, I guess. Better? Worse?
and the blend:

Its subtle, but I do think its better in the update. Good work and thanks for sharing.
I think everyone would agree that the darker one looks almost entirely idtentical to graphite. In fact, if you were to put that in a pencil in blender, it would look fanastic. Likewise I think the reason it doesn’t look like metal is that the coloring is TOO irregular. It looks almost like a piece of ash (hence the graphite reference). So… I would tone that down.
Thanks guys.
Desoto: I guess your right. I didnt even notice its resemblence to Graphite. I’m not sure how i would “tone it down” but could you perhaps tweak my blend and post a render?
thanks
dante
Well I don’t. Every day for 9 years I worked with hot pressed steel and that is exactly what it looks like, somewhat reflective at the core with “scales” all around.
Jean
Well every day for the last 15 years I’ve been going to class using pencils, and thats exactly what a pencil tip looks like.
You should ask for a refund !
Well personally, i could be talked into either. lol Thanks guys.
