method of creating mesh in clear glass tutorial

Hi all,
First of all I want to say that blender is a great thing - keep up the good work. The same goes for the documentation and the many tutorials.
The reason for my post is to get some more info on the clear glass tutorial which can be found at:
http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Tutorials/Materials/Clear_Glass

After creating my own wine glass and following the steps, I did get something that looked like glass but it didn’t look like the rendered images in this tutorial. I would like to find out whether it is caused by my crappy version of the wine glass or not.

I created the wine glass by spinning a mesh profile much like what is described here under the spin section:
http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/PartII/Basic_Mesh_Modelling

The mesh of the wine glass in the ‘clear glass’ tutorial looks infinitely better though. It would be great if somebody could explain how that mesh was created.

Very simple. Add a circle, 8 Vertices are enough. Extrude and scale.

thanks for the tip - I fooled around with extrude but my edges were always straight lines. The subdivision makes sense and I will experiment with it. The ui changed a bit since that video but I’m sure I can figure it out.
