Looking good!
Mewtwo is from Pokemon, originally a game. The cartoon version is quite different in appearance so finding consistent reference images is difficult. I’m going more for the cartoon which is closer in proportions to a human but with a more realistic appearance rather than toon. I’m thinking he probably looks a bit odd at the moment because he has no limbs.
Honestly, especially if it comes to 1st-Gen Pokemon, I’d rather use the cartoon as reference, simply because of additional details (even if they’re only few) that wheren’t possible with the sprites back then.
And even now with current generations, the graphical advantage of the cartoons is obvious, given that in most versions the sprites are static and you only have a limited resolution and pretty much an unusable back-view.
Mewtwo, being one of the, erm was it… 5? original legendaries, has a single, occluded and very short appearance in the cartoon its own movie (shared with Mew). The first and best movie of them all. (In fact from what I’ve seen, the only one I like. Though due to that trend, I stopped watching the later ones.) Same trend goes with the whole cartoon, aswell as the overall creativity of new pokemon in the games - B&W have some real oddities that reach from strange to terrible, sprite-design-wise…
The mid section appears to be too thick in the back.
Otherwise awesome so far.
Thanks for the comments guys. Yeh I definately agree with you kram 1032. I’ll get to the midsection maybe this evening. I came up with a quick method of making some teeth for him today which I thought I’d put into a quick tutorial if anybody is interested. There may be better ways but hopefully somebody enjoys it (The images are quite large because I couldn’t use the Manage Attachments or Insert Image buttons for some reason):
You don’t know Mewtwo? Pokemon!?
Anyway, I think it looks great. I would elevate the stomach a bit more, as yours look a bit depressed compared to the references.
Theeth?
I can’t recall seeing Mewtwo ever opening something that could be a mouth…
It usually did some telepathy-thing…
But ok, why not?
Here’s a bit of progress for today: I’ve tweaked the midsection and abdomen a bit, I think I’ll move on to the arms next.
@Kram1032: The teeth are just subtle and are really only there to fill his mouth and so it doesn’t look like he just has gums. Here’s a scene from the movie where you can see his teeth slightly:
comming along really nicely
Indeed, theeth. Didn’t know
Hey guys, it’s been a while since I’ve posted because of Uni work but I’ve been working on Mewtwo on the side and have a body and texture done now
Finding consistent reference for the legs was quite difficult, so I ended up going with the anime appearance which was slightly more hoof-like than the original flat feet.
What do you guys think?
Topology looking great now! Good job!
With the texture, im not sure, something just doesn’t feel/look right with it. I think its because there is too much grunge and no bump mapping on it. What do you think?
Thanks achery323, I think I see what you’re saying, there is a normal map but the SSS softens most of the shading. I’ll play around with it to get the right effect.
honestly, I think in this case, the SSS does more harm than good. Try to either tune it down (especially change the size value) or switch it off all together.
Also, I think the brighter parts are too bright while the darker parts are too saturated and dark. Mewto isn’t hypercontrasted, usually.
The topology is really good now, though
Thanks kram1032, I’ll play around with it a bit. I just looked at it again this morning after working on another project and I definitely see what you’re saying. I’ll post an update soon.
Looks really nice! The topology looks nice and clean, though as said, the material looks a bit weird (maybe because of the sss and bright lights).
