Before you spend a lot of money on a shotgun mike, get a cardboard tube from the post office and stuff your microphone into one end. Wrap it up in some terrycloth or an old tee shirt to muffle the sound from the wrong end of the tube, and point the other end at your actors and test it out. You may not need anything fancy or expensive.
