mirroring objects

Does anyone know how to mirror an object from the center as determined by the center button rather than the center of the object information. I’m trying to build half of the object, mirror, and fuse the parts together. If I can mirror off of a center I determine then I can just mirror and remove doubles. Any clues.

Philart: Press period. In 2.32, in the 3d window, beside the viewport shading button is the rotation/scaling pivot button. Pressing period switches this to “3d cursor” alternately you could click on the button and select from the drop-down list.
