I noticed today that all the YouTube videos embedded in this thread up until July 2020 had disappeared, even though I’ve seen them there much more recently than that. I’ve managed to restore all the ones I could find by replacing the youtube.com links with their youtu.be counterparts, except one which already used the correct youtu.be link and had to be replaced with the .com one.
Any idea what might have happened, and whether it’s likely to happen again? I’ve been through this process once before with .gif images (in fact I found one of them had broken again), and having to keep all the videos and images maintained in such a large thread is quite the ordeal, as you can imagine.
Unfortunately I can’t provide examples of missing videos since I’ve already restored them, however I did find another post containing two videos that used to be (and should still be) embedded, but now only display images that link to YouTube instead:
Hmm, the only thing I saw there is that there were now no empty lines between the links and the text. After adding that, the videos showed up as embedded again.
Strange, as I hadn’t changed anything in that post. Now that I think of it, the one youtu.be link I mentioned before (Human Progress - #722 by ChrisJones) also only displayed an image until I replaced it with the youtube.com link.
All the other ones were youtube.com links, which I changed to youtu.be links. I just tried changing one of them back to the old link, and can’t get it to disappear again.
