mixing materials? halo doesnt work

I’m working on a firefly character and of course want the tail to glow. I thought I could set the vertex group for the tail to a material that was a halo to do the glow…but it just gives me a flat green color. I tried putting the same material on another object and it worked fine.

If anyone can tell me how to make this work, or has suggestions on another way to do the glowing tail, I’d really appreciate it.

I don’t think you can mix Halo or Wire materials on the same object. You would need to separate out that piece of your mesh as its own object and then assign only the Halo material to it. You can separate out a piece of your mesh by selecting it and pressing P in Edit mode. You can then parent that new object to then old in Object mode, by selecting the new object, shift-Selecting the old and then using Ctrl-P.

True - I submitted what I thought was a bug for this issue, and was informed that it is working as designed. On the bright side, there was a time when only the top texture slot could be used with a halo material - now you can use all.
