mixing mesh and sculpting techniques?

Hi, I got to a certain point with a mesh built object, ie edges, vertices, faces extruded etc and applied subsurf modifier. For finishing it I was expecting to use smooth etc in sculpty mode. I multires’d it and entered sculpty mode but none of the tools had any effect. Should this work? I’m using version 2.49b on a macbook.

Something to check which has helped others with similar issue when only the grab tool works.
Sculpt / input settings / set tablet strength adjust to 0


OK thanks, I get a response now but what is the “table strength”?

I had once a problem like yours.
after some work, i understood that the sculpt is working- it’s just working VERY slow.
I didn’t succeed making it better, so i used the sculpt over and over again.
