MoCap issue - Brekel to Blender

Hi everyone!

I’m having an issue with an armature exported from Brekel:

What happens is that the bones get twisted at several places, due to the fact that the bones exported from Brekel and Blender’s native ones, are using different axis orientation. According to Brekel’s FAQ page, the preset inside Brekel should be set to “Biped”, while the import settings in Blender should be set to “Quaternions”. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make any significant difference. I also know there’s an option to untwist selected bones using Blender’s motion capture tools, but that option doesn’t have any effect at all, at least not in the current version of Blender (2.67).

I’ve watched Benjy Cook’s four-part tutorial on how to setup and retarget an armature from Brekel, though I suspect it might be outdated. Either that, or I’m doing something wrong.

On a side-note, I’ve managed to get somewhat better results by retargeting manually. But to be honest, it’s not really a viable option.

Please reply if you have encountered something similar, and/or know how to fix this.

Kind regards
Dario

I have spent months trying to fix bvh files with twisted bones like you described, never had any luck! Not many people know how to use them either so help is difficult to find. I discovered some nice bvh files from here http://www.onlyfreshfiles.com/cat/bvh/5

search for:

31227_ActionBvhMotions,
3ds max 2009 Motion Capture Files,
bvh pack by Skud, fighting_mocaps,
massive_pack_of_3d_motion_capture_files

WARNING!!!
some of the files are fake or could be bad for the health of your PC, so only search for what i recommended above.
if you cannot identify a suspicious file by looking at it avoid downloading it. for example, if you search and find a file that has extension “.exe” that should raise an alarm. bvh file should have extension .bvh not .exe Some sites will ask you to install download managers don’t do it!!
IF you can get pass all that and Download what i listed above, you will be a very happy guy for what your about to find.

if you need more info on using BVH files, just search my posts.

Have fun!
