Modeling a specific knob

Hi there!

As some of you might already know, I’m working on the Yamaha R-S500. Now there’s one point where I’m stuck… It’s the knob for selecting the audio source (on the right side of the speaker buttons). My attempt would be to model the part which looks out of the case and then to put on a circle. I’m just afraid this gives me very ugly topology.
If you know a better way on doing this, please tell me! :stuck_out_tongue:


I would start with a circle then add some faces and extrude.

(Which may be no better than what you are doing already as far as topology is concerned…)

I do it this way, starting from 32-sided cylinder. Extruded knob protrusion and faced with quads. And added some edge:

This is my quick attempt. If it’s detail you’re after I’ve create the basic shape and then subdivided it in order to model the notch. The proportions are probably way off but I don’t have half an hour or so to go into great detail.
