Modeling after an image

Hi guys, I’m still new to blender and I’d like to now how to import an image which is not rendered or used as texture or whatever but which serves as example to model after.
I do not know how it’s called, nor how to do it, but could anyone tell me how to?

Thanks in advance!

Peter

Generally it is called a reference image or a blueprint.

How to do it: (My favorite method)

  1. prepare images in at least side and front view, top and bottom views can be helpful also if you have them.
  2. in blender in the View file menu (mine is at bottom of 3d window) go to Background image
  3. a dialog box pops up, browse to where your images are stored and select the appropriate one
  4. Set the 3d window you are working in to correspond to the view of the image ( front to front)
  5. Start modeling

In 3DS Max it had a special name I think…
No matter. I have run into a problem.
The image in the background is the one from the file i selected. However, a piece of the picture has been cut and was pasted to the other side of the picture whilst the image is also deformed.
What’s going on and what can be done against it?

I think I’ve already read about something like this, but I’m not sure.

[EDIT]
Problem magically solved… I wonder why. All I did was copying the image
(like this: [ ] => [ ][ ]) in the same bitmap, as a temporarily solution to the de shaping…
weird, but I’m not complaining!
