Modeling Alternative Costumes for Characters

If I were to model alternative costumes for my character, how can I do it and keep my rigged and all of its animations. I’m was wondering because I see it all the time in games. I was thinking for my character to have a different costume when she gains a power up.

Examples:

Like Mario for example, he wears different costumes when he gets a power-up, but his game play mechanics are the same, besides some minor differences.

I think you can use the Parent actuator in the logic editor.
