That way I do it is to add a circle then extrude where I want to but is does not have a nice flow to it and of course a slight distortion at the curved areas. is there a better way?

That’s exactly what I need. I will do a search for a tut on curves, (never tried them) If you know of a good tut please let me know. thanks

Have a look at these. After you make the handlebar using curves, you can change it to a mesh using Alt c. Usually, when I work with curves, I make a copy of the curve object before using Alt c. That way, I can always go back to the original and tweak the shape easily.
