Modeling ideas/help

Okay, so, I’ve only actually really modeled one thing, a mortar… while it’s not the best thing I’ve ever done, I really don’t know where to start with anything, or what to even try to model… or how to model correctly, what to start with, where to go from that, correct topology, what should be made in separate parts and what should be made from the same piece.

In general, I just want some ideas of what to model, and the way I should go about modeling it.

Thanks.

Just go that way where you know a lot about in real life, even if it’s boring to you.

Well, if it’s boring to me, then it’ll probably deter me from actually doing it, which so far it kind of does, because I don’t know where to start. Or what to start on.

just look at the desk in front of you and pick an object to model.

When you are learning to model, you usually need to work through some more or less boring stuff to learn how the program and the different tools work. You need to start with something easy enough, don’t bee too ambitious in the beginning.

The truth is that most of the stuff you make in the beginning will look absolutely horrible. You might not realize this at the moment, but at some point you will. When I started using blender I made a few models that I thought looked awesome, but when I look back at them now, I can see how poorly the are made, and how far I’ve come from that.

In short, just pick pretty much any object and start modelling, and then ask for help if you get stuck.

Thanks Morio, loved the reply. And that’s exactly right, but any object just completely overwhelms me, because I think of an object I want to model, and then think about it and it just seems to complex, then I try to think of something that’ll be easy to model, and I usually just hit a wall and can’t think of anything.

well congratulations on getting to the point where you are actually thinking about how to model things, that in itself is a useful thing to do believe it or not. but will become much more profitable once you have more experience.

The reason you are getting overwhelmed by things is because you don’t have the experience of modeling other things. No mater how boring that is to do it is necessary, it’s kinda like memorizing the vocabulary of a new language. But it will give your mind the ability to think of how to model something, which in turn will keep you from being overwhelmed. and yes, it won’t be done very well at first, just like you can’t speak the language other then a few words. the important thing is to practice, nobody writes a masterpiece on the first day they learn a language.

to help, a good place to start if you really don’t know what to do is the weekday challenges here. They have been invaluable to me personally when in your situation. past that I can say the only thing that pushes you past this block is how badly you want to learn yourself, nothing I or anybody else can say will give you the silver bullet that will make the whole thing happy and fun all the way.

but I feel you dude in your current place, and can say I’ve been there, just push on.

eidt: and I just thought of something, don’t worry about finishing things all the time. I have a huge folder of unfinished doodling that I’ve learned boat loads from. Some is stuff I started to make, like a bike, computer case, even a car, other stuff is random and straight from my head. if nothing else that teaches you how not to make something, which is just as valuable.

For you, I would suggest doing as many tutorials on modeling as you can stand. This will give you a perspective from people who are doing it from experience. A) you won’t have to think of what to model. Just do a tutorial and B) it will supply you with the tools you need to look at anything and then pick it up and model it.

Thanks guys, a lot, I have done quite a few tutorials in the past, but I think I over did them at the moment and currently don’t have the time, I’ll try to start working on stuff next week  Wish me luck.

this should keep you busy for a while:

Wow, thank you, it most definitely will, i’ll get on it when I get back from my trip to Illinois. Or maybe while i’m up there.

I thought that’s going to be boring (I know cars and I don’t like to fix them).
Earlier I downloaded 1000s of pictures for modeling and I felt the same way as you.
Now 30-40 pictures is enough and I know what to do and my mind is full. I can think which tool is better or know what looking for and I can easier thinking in 3d.

So don’t worry anything at all, just maybe you should go that way where you familiar in your life. Good luck !
