Modeling in Wireframe mode

I prefer to model using background references so I use wireframe mode, the trouble is when I apply “Loop cut and slide” my object turns black is there a way round this? Thanks

What version of blender, what operating system, what graphics card.
Ensure you’re using latest blender version and graphics card drivers.
Show screenshot that clearly shows the problem and blend file.

I am using Blender 2.65 r53189 its the same with any version I seem to use though.
My system specs are :-
AMD QUAD CORE FX-4100 3600MHz
Windows 8 Pro
GTX550 Ti 1GB GDDR5
8GB DDR3 memory

I think I have solved my problem ,I went to preferences > Themes >3d view and
chose a lighter colour for “Face” ,I now have transparent objects. :yes:
