I recently got obsessed with modeling/sculpting the giant monster crocodile Gustave (the largest nile crocodile ever spotted in Africa!), although this would be my very first character/organic model, I would love to recreate this magnificent beast in Blender!
The first problem would probably be that I have no idea where to begin. That’s basically why I am posting here, to get a starting point.
Any reptile expert here is warmly welcome to respond with their input! As I am nowhere near a reptile expert… XD But I do LOVE crocodiles!
Thanks for your reply! I can imagine… It also won’t be an easy task for me. Not only because there are not much reference material of this particular crocodile, but I’ve never made an organic model before. But I’ll look at ways to make crocodiles from scratch, particularly nile crocodiles, as Gustave is one
Please don’t rush your growth it may have some negative effect in the long run. It’s usual good to take one step at time. Start with something simple, something that you find many tutorials out there, post wip or in focus on critic section and see how it goes, let yourself grow naturally and your Nile crocodile will be your main inspiration goal.
Well said! I’ve mostly been modeling on one particular WIP lately (a tanker, the world’s largest ship ever built) but that’s a mechanical object. A crocodile is organic, so… that’s a whole new way of modeling for me.
For myself, i usually start creating a low poly model with references in side and top view; if I find them (or else i just draw). For instance look at the great model Crocodile - 3D model by mrdanyboy (@mrdanyboy) - Sketchfab
clik model inspector, and check the wireframe, look at the nice topology, you should aim for this. Once such a model is made, you are halfway, add a multires modifier and start sculpting, etc…
Others will prefer starting sculpting directly in Dyntopo, but anyway at a certain point you will need to do a retopo.
Have fun with your croco.
