Modeling with Blender

I create models for railroad simulators. The creations involve pipes with bends at whatever angle that is required, ninety degrees, the most common.
I can create tubes in Blender but I have no idea how to bend them to match the desired angle.
One solution I see is chopping a torroid to the desired configuration.
How do I cut the torroid so that I am left with only the piece I want?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There are some good instructions on modeling pipes from Orinoco there, very detailed.

Using curves might be an option.
