Modelling a sword... Should I start from a cylinder or plane?

I’ve modelled swords before and they always look very off, probably because of the topology.

Just to clarify it’s this kind of sword


I would start from plane.

now just some constrained scaling / mirroring / remove doubles…

… when it comes to swords, I always have to think about the classic Silo sword modeling tutorial.

I was stuck modelling using the old cylinder method that the max guys use for some reason.

you’re welcome. You will want to add some tight edge loops around the sharp edges if subsurfacing.

Key advice: measure an actual sword of the type you intend to model.
