Modelling a truck tarpaulin

Hey guys,
Im trying to create a realistic truck tarpaulin. Is there a simple way to get it look right? Are there attempts you can recommend? Is there even a useful addon for that that prevents spending hours of work?

My goal is sth similar to this:
http://www.planenmacher.eu/fileadmin/processed/csm_LKW-Plane-blau_44d360c4c2.jpg

Id like to use it later on as a midpoly model, around 40k for the full tarpaulin

Have you tried setting up a few pinning points and then let wind do the modeling?

Hi there,
Yes as @Tiku_67 said, the most elegant solution may be some cloth stuff, bound to the hook-wiring side thingie.

An alternative may be creating a vertex paint mask on the sides (black), then creating a displacement/bump stuff for the middle, then multiply or mix them somehow, so the sides are flat, but elsewhere it has the effect.
A problem with this, is that you cannot show the shape of the wooden planks behind, to which the blue cover is pressed to.

Hey,

here’s a method:

though I’d spend more time on it than I did for accuracy.

One important thing to note - set up the UVMap ( ie after applying scale ) to the tarp mesh BEFORE you do any simulation or sculpting. Then if you need a repeating texture in the shader it will be uniform. You can always do another UVMap afterwards too, but this makes simpler to start with.

Cheers,
Dj.
