@Shugs81 - it’s both actually. I posted the bump map I created in my Christine thread. I modelled the details then did a view-port render, then created the bump map from that.
I’ve modelled the number plate lettering and after adjusting position and materials is looking good. I’m starting to work on two final renders, maybe three, before I move on to the next part; TM said he wanted scratches etc., so I have an idea, which I hope I can accomplish. Working on the environment atm; also hoping to do a turntable render - not done before so will see how that goes.
Couple of images of the modelled number plate in Christine thread.
I was about to ask the same questions about those headlights the look pretty good.
Time to play catch up I started blocking in the interior and the wheel and suspension systems the are still some things I need to fix on the exterior though the c pillar and the rear light hold. But I have about three days of clear modelling time no distractions so its time to bunker down and work.
boooo… finished the suspension… scaled it to look right then realised i needed to scale the wheels up… so I have to rebuild the cab as i can’t scale it right… think it wasn’t modelled correctly… no pics but my weekend will be full of cab and final details… think i need to model the hood and the actual driver-y bit separately too… hmm… still have to work out these windows too… anyhow… expect big progress over the weekend!!.. hopefully!
@Shugs81 - I’m sure I mentioned this, but I know I do the same crap again and again*. When you add a new object, it automatically has a scale of one; if you need to change it, then go into edit mode to do so. If you remember to always do that you’ll always have objects of the same scale and rotation.
Like forgetting to make a backup.
Like making a change on the high polly mesh, instead of the low-polly original; admittedly can’t always, but when I can I wish I always remembered to do so.
If I’d added the chrome strips on the original mesh, instead of the final one it wouldn’t have been so awfully time consuming to fix the flow issues after correcting the alignment of the chrome strips.
tbh the cab doesn’t look right the more i look at it so would probably need remodelling again anyways…
EDIT: @writers block: I know what you mean… what I was meaning was that when i scaled it up to match the new wheel size i realised that the whole thing was out of proportion in different places and when i tried to fix it it just started looking rubbish… I know where i went wrong tho so should be able to rebuild it quickly enough… and I also need to try to have a look at the underneath as at the minute it seems like everything is floating… It’s a bank holiday weekend here so have 3 days to work on it… plan to get the cab rebuilt and hopefully should be able to salvage the grill and lights etc… got a few detaily bits to add too and a little bit more work to the back end of the truck too… managed to find some ref for the lady and the “haulin ass” thing on the front of the truck too! so am still progressing forward with it! hopefully will finish off the model in these three days! then I need to make an environment for it… which is something else i’ve not done either… o.0…
this is a massive learning curve for me as I’ve only really made bits and pieces and never really finished anything to any reasonable kind of standard… and I’m hoping to get a chance to get some good results as I’ve never really looked at the compositor properly!!
@Shugs81 when its comes to things like scale blocking out is really important. You can see it on my post the are bunch of things like the seats, tires, steering wheel…simple objects that only need to have the right size so that I can quickly see if it all fits together.
@TM yeah… I know what you mean… I think the cab currently is quite close to what it should be but now the full suspension is done and scaled it looks tiny… then I notice that the nose of it is a bit slim… I think i need to work out the underneath of the cab and how it all fits together… hmmm… I’ll have a think about that this afternoon while i’m supposed to be at work!
I need all the time I can get!!! my job finished at the end of september and I’m doing a 3d games art and animation course which mainly covers 3ds max(booo… i really don’t like using it!! :() and I’v been in touch with the placement officer on the course and he said i can submit portfolio stuff using blender so I’ve really got to get this done to a high standard!! nowhere near Writers Block’s Christine like!
I reckon I’m doing well for my first vehicle model but I always have this thing where i just can’t quite finish a project off… I’m definately going to finish this one tho!!
with my course it was work or timescales not being met… for the course there’s a forum doing similar challenges and in max i find it really really clunky and slow to use so was unable to meet the timescales… then i started working on a game with some peeps from the other courses ran by the same “college” so i’d start making something for them… they’d change there minds or decide they wanted something else… the last words that were said to me were to “stop playing games and learn blender”… considering the only times i had played games i decided to quit and continue to learn blender without them confusing the hell out of me… they would have meetings and decide on stuff then ask me why i wasn’t doing it when i hadn’t been told about it…
either way I’ve done stuff on the course but I wouldn’t deem it anywhere near portfolio standard just cause everyone on the course would have the same thing…
I was interested in making a game but things kept getting changed and it got to the point where i didn’t even know what the game was… but i won’t start bitching about that… I’ve already got an idea for the environment I’m putting it in and was looking through the blenderguru vids and seems straightforward enough! I may even get onto it this weekend!! just a shame that I have to learn max for my course too…
Don’t be disappointed about learning max; it’s an industry standard piece of software. Plus, it will likely let you discover aspects of modelling you may not have considered given that you’ll be thinking of it from a slightly different perspective.
I’m not dissapointed… i just find it quite clunky to use and dont really like not being able to work with some modifiers on… i understand that its a staple in the games intustry and thats where my course is aiming me but i have more of an interest in animation and hi poly stuff… i also find that its very resource intense and i struggle with modelling in it sometimes as i want to start quick and use a line to outline something and extrude but you cant do that in max… it has to be a poly before you can do anything… i keep intending to try maya properly as its supposed to be closer to blender… plus i dont know how willing i am to throw £4’000 at a piece of software when blender is out there for free…
@Shugs81 - I here you; I tried max and didn’t like it. Now I see what folks achieve with it, and the results are mind-blowing, but I just couldn’t get to like it.
There didn’t seem - no clue if there are - many shortcuts, and that is what I like about blender.
I may try again I suppose, now I’ve actually more of a clue on modelling - I can devote more of the time to learning max. Maybe.
i started changing the short cuts in max to the blender ones… also autodesk screwed me over by changing the upgrade system the day i was due to upgrade to a full license… which was part of the reason i chose the course cause i could have upgraded to the full licence for £800 rather than £3,500 which it is now… but i suppose you can get the educational licenses for free now…
