models

Hey everyone. I’ve noticed that when I go looking for Blender models all I find are models for Lightwave and Maya. Are there any places I can find models for Blender?

This may be the wrong forum for this sort of thing :-? Perhaps an admin will move it?

That said, I havent seen too many .blends available on the net, but there are some very useful scripts for blender that will import 3ds, lwo, obj and other formats into blender. Most of them require the full python installation, im afraid…

Maybe someday this will all be built in to Blender, but for now, we have to use scripts

hope that helps

yea, that does help, thanks

y? this is blender general

I got most of my models in LWO/Max/3ds format when I started to learn Blender.

If you do a search here at elYsiun for Accutrans3d, you will find the links for this fully working 3d model converter, just save the models as DXF then open with Blender.

There are, though, masses of Blender models on the www, search using google for Blender models and .Blends. Or go to Blender3d.org and follow the links to the online Blender communities, you can find loads of Blender models this way.

Sonix.

I moved it eh… :stuck_out_tongue:

I have been using a program called crossroads, which is free, to convert 3DS, which is a common format, to DXF, or VRML, which Blender will import. It also imports open inventor, and videoscape, but you won’t find many of those lying around. Once you have a model, just hit F1, and load it. It will appear in your scene, and if it doesn’t, look around. It may be that it is way up in the air, or very tiny, so you may not see it if there is an object near the center of your grid, which is usually where they tend to pop up. Oh yeah, and if you import a DXF, be sure to select all vertices in edit mode, go to edit buttons, and hit ‘remove doubles’.

For $10 US you can get this cd:

oh…he sorry

I know this probably isn’t too useful for you but I think it’s important not to let the availability of pre made models discourage you from making your own.

It’s often nice to use models in your projects that are unique and original. I find it really inspiring when I see a model that I’ve never seen before which cannot be used by everyone.

I hope there are some who can relate to this view.

Solid Snake: Yeah man, your right on. I like to use other peoples models sometimes but they are usually only temporary and/or for reference. I think its way more rewarding to do my own work. That said, when I was new to the 3D scene, i liked to grab other peoples models to put together scenes for fun. It helped me wrap my mind around the fundamentals of 3D art.

I like to take several models, and disassemble them, and then reassemble them in funny ways. Like, you could take a model of a sofa, and then take the leg off of a person model, and make it coming out from under the cushion, or put a dog head on a human body or visa versa. The possibilities stagger the mind.
