Modern Japanese House

Hi,

In my effort to become better and presenting my work, I am investing a lot of time on learning how to compose, render, and light scenes. My expertise thus far has been primarily in modeling, not so much on presentation.

Here is a fist try with using many resources - some paid, some free. I followed Andrew Price’s tutorials on the Uber PBR shader, and then took many 1k textures from poliigon and elsewhere. Scene is lit only by an hdri from hdri heaven. Trees are created with the updated sapling tree addon.

I feel like i have all the components, but they just need to be composed well, with obviously some work on the ground texture, maybe getting rid of the rocks, showing how the building sits well in its context, etc.

Would need to refine the model a bit yet, especially with the roof details on the edges. Also, will be making the inset panels on the facade with the same subdivision. Thus far they were modeled with all modifiers, so quite cool and very quick.

Would be nice to hear how the composition can be improved.

Hey! This is a great start. My two cents:

Composition
The current point of interest is the lit face on the right. For me, there needs to be something to balance it on the left, maybe some bushes to the left of the door.
The sense of depth is lacking a bit. Play with the foreground and background more.

Textures and materials
The ground and path textures are very obviously repeating, try changing the scale with a mapping node. They also look very flat, you’ll have to take a look at displacement and specular maps.
The wood grain direction on the side of the roof looks off, maybe change the mapping angle.
