modifier, subsurf doesn't stay?

i created a pawn-falling animation, pretty beginner-level. now when i press P, the subsurf i put for the pawn is gone, and it looks all blocky and stuff. how do i get the subsurf to stay in the animation?

Subsurfing doesn’t work in the game engine, but in the Subsurf modifier, you can click Apply to make the subsurfing “real.”

And…
subsurf it’s not a good approach to the game engine, because it creates too many
polys, in general!
