This is a small addon that let you create links between modifiers of different objects, meaning that multiple modifiers will be controlled by one modifier , each modifier can be linked to another object modifier, the modifiers can be updated at different events .
You can get the addon from my Github repository:

I know about limitations in creating modifiers as add-on, however I feel that your solution, albeit pretty, however a little out of context, making difficult to take a complete overview of the situation.
Anyway, perhaps it could stay better on the Properties panel, being it own of the active object, rather than on the Tool shelf.
Just discovered this addon. Has anyone used it recently? I can’t work out how to make it go, or maybe it doesn’t work properly in 2.79…Seems like a great helper tool potentially. (e.g. quickly enabling/disabling lattice on multiple objects at once, though I know this can be done with alt-enable)
sounds like a great idea!
unfortunately i have no clue how to make this work.
lets say i have two cubes … one with a subsurf modifier. how can i make the second cube use this modifier from the first cube?
