Moonshot (Winner)

UPDATE!
I won overall best!! WOOHOOOO!!
Check it out here (the very first one): http://www6.cet.edu/copper/2010_winners.php
I guess I won 1000$ and stuff. The contest was international and had many different categories, college and high school, literature, music, 2d, video and 3d. They chose mine to be the best of the best. I entered in the high school video category. I got interviewed by my local newspaper (big deal!.. not). And yeah, so I’m pretty psyched.

Finally finished this!

It’s a 2 minute clip about Life and Work on the moon, enjoy! It’s for the NASA 2010 art competition. Titled “Moonshot”…

Special thanks to jplur for helping me! The rest of the credits are in the video and the video’s description.

Due date is April 15th, today is April 13th. :spin:

This is my first animation, and it took a looong time! I planned on being done a couple weeks ago, but the rendering process took forever. It’s just 1 second shy of the 2 minute contest limit. Please leave a comment because I worked hard on this, and it’s nice to hear feedback. Thanks for looking!

Great work for your first animation! I wish you well in the competition.

this is very good i love the camera moment , and angle’s

Thank you, I’m not too worried about the results, I am just satisfied that I was able to do this. If I don’t win or place this year, I’m definitely going to try again this fall, now that I know what I’m doing.

Thank you! there were parts where I wanted to slow it down, but I had to cap it at 2 minutes, and it was difficult to correct stuff because of the long render times.

neat, it looks like something i would see on the discovery channel in some documentary. great work.

That’s exactly what I was shooting for! Thanks

Well, really nice work, I didn’t understand what was going on in that video, but it was really well done.

In the future you can make proxi scens with low poly stand-ins for the objects. It is a great way to test timing before you commit to a final render.

Very nicely done! i think you will get something for the contest, at least an honorable mention… but i hope more!
a few crits though:
in the first scene, the angle of the ship on the approach path seems…wrong. maybe because of the camera angle, or something else, but something didnt look right. i am an astronomy enthusiast and have seen many films and documentaries on space in general and the space race in particular. for a reason i cant place, that shot was unrealistic, so i guess i cant tell you how to fix it…
also, in that shot, there are some strange shadows flickering across the moons surface.

while panning through the first “control tower” there are also some flickering artifacts as the camera nears the window.

the textures in general could’ve been improved, and
the particles for the lander’s engines could’ve used some work as well.

but the animation was great! maybe add a little more of people doing things. like in the greenhouse, the guy picking the plants added a lot to the scene.
i think thats it, good luck and great job!

Very cool, I loved the camera work too. The whole thing filled me with sciencey feeling. How did you do the lander’s blue engine flame?

Yeah, I should have done that. I didn’t realize it could only be 2 minutes until the greater portion of my scenes were already rendered. There was still stuff I wanted to fit into the last couple of scenes, so parts had to be sped up.

Thanks, there was a lot of flickering and things wrong. I really wanted to go back and correct this stuff, but the render times were so great. It was also difficult to manipulate the scenes because of their size. So many polys. I really should have done what Richard suggested.

Thank you, I just used simple particles. I gave them a blue material set to halo. The halos had a pretty high “add” value, giving them the white glow.

Nice one, It made me smile because I like space and like to know what NASA is up to out there. (I know its not like the video in real life)

I think that is great for first animation well done.

Have they announced the winners? Hope you win.

Check out the first post, I got overall winner!

WOW. Congrats!!!

congratulations!!!

congratulations Dalton! very nice movie and pretty good work!

Very nice work! My Hearty congratulations!
