I think its because it is a method that tries to simulate real world lighting and its effects.

It’s fake because the method he used was probably a whole heap of spotlights all pointing in towards the centre. This is not actually global illumination, but is a much more render economical substitute. GI involves complex algorithms that simulate the light travelling through the scene, bouncing off other objects, etc, which the spotlight method doesn’t do.

Note: Setp 4. Select lamp, press F4 and click spot. While lamp still selected, hold shift and select sphere, press CTRL+P to make parent. press F7, click Dupli verts and rot. * Make sure you flip the normals on the half sphere to get your spot cones to point inside.
