MORE of Sago's Sketches; looking for documented similar work

* find post below to see more drawings and sketches

Yo folks,

some time ago I started my graduation project for my study Teacher Visual Arts and Design. At this moment I’m making a small book (A6 size, 100 pages) with a selection of personal sketches and doodles from the last 12 years.

Unfortunately I’ll also be making some sort of written report with, I dunno, reflections, process description or whatever. To make life easier on that part, it would be helpfull to have work from (known) artists that has some similarities with mine… you know, for doing comparisons. Anything documented, written + images, either on the internet or in books would be great.

So if anybody knows documented similar work, even if it’s just a few (visual) aspects, please let me know.

Love y’all,
Sago

O, and don’t be shy and let me know what you think.

here you can browse first 50 episodes from the comic alan ford which is not known out of central Europe I guess.
There are the all episodes for you to read if you can read that language (?).

Gab-

Wow, , that is a great style! It looks similar to how I try to draw.
Like, if I was actually good  Ha, no, but this is really good!
I know a lot of game teams at the very least who would love to have you doing concept for them!

Keep this up, I really like it.

Drew

thats a lot of faces.

trak wrecka,
yeah, cluttered, nice word. I believe it’s actually that aspect that gives my work its special quality. The drawings itself aren’t that great, just okay I guess, but the way they are expressively put together, plus the quantity, makes it special in some way. Quality because of quantity.

I HATE U…why did u change ur avatar…i miss that weird looking baby…

and this one doesn’t look weird?

Lasphere,
yeah, that big ass sketch(actually a digital collage) was the start of my graduation project when I printed it on 1x1 meter (79x79 inch). Looks pretty neat.

gabdab,
thanks for the link, man. That’s a nice style. Unfortunately can’t read the language, and when I said I was looking for documented similar work, I didn’t really mean traditional comic work (cause there’s more than enough to be found about that).

free_ality,
thanks, dude. Though the technical side of the work is still a bit so-so, I believe it really shows a true passion for drawing, which makes it enjoyable to watch… well, that’s what I think… yeah… what?

Basse,
yep, lotsa faces. I’ve always been ashamed of my sketches because the amount of personal cliche drawing; for example dozens of the same faces with the same facial expressions. It was actually since BConf '06 when I realised my sketches are more than the sum of its parts, when I saw people like Roger creaming their pants over my sketchbooks.

I also think my ‘drawing-lotsa-faces-my-whole-life’ was good for my Blenderwork; it translated well into my 3D work, and it was a great practice before even using Blender.

If anybody knows some similar work, please let me know,

Sago

If you mean similar as in ‘lots of faces together’ then no, I can’t think of any.

What I did see this weekend which may (but probably not) be of use is the DVD of Monster House. I didn’t think much of the movie style (or the movie) but the concept art in the Extras section was worth a long look. Some of the artwork had an almost “Mad Magazine” sketch-illustration feel to it. I didn’t take note of the artists’ names but maybe they have other stuff you could look up if you can find out who they are.

As for your work, I don’t think it needs to be said that it is simply brilliant. I hate words like “natural talent” because it suggests a lack of effort - and it’s clear you’ve gone through miles of pencils to get to where you are today. Simply brilliant.

Of course, if a psychologist (or the CIA) ever got hold of these, you’d probably be locked away in a padded cell. There has to be a hidden message somewhere in that lot.

you probably already know his work, but i’d say “Robert Crumb”.

haha

Yeah, these sketches are great Sago! I think the first ones were better, but I like…
er, ‘sketch026.jpg’ The first of these new ones. The style is really good, clean(cluttered but clean, how do you do it?) and the chracters are really fun. Their personalities scream off the page.

Peace!
Drew

Hi people,

sorry for the late reply, I was kinda busy blendering and watching Gilmore Girls and Judging Amy… uhm… I mean CSI Miami and Prisonbreak… yeah, that was it.

AndyD,
I will definitely do a search for that Monster House concept art, ya might never know.

Yah, you were right not to use the term ‘natural talent’ cause it took me lots and lots of drawing to get there (still not satisfied with the quality of my drawings, the quantity on the paper however makes up for a lot). But I always love doing it, cause it’s just a way to express myself.

basse,
yeah, hell I know Crumb. But ya know, it never occured to me to use his quick drawings as some sort of comparison. So thanks a bunch!

free_ality,
thanx man, I guess you prefer the more cartoony style made with fineliner.

Rock’n’Roll, :RocknRoll:

Sago

Could it be…

Is it possible ??

The primordial sketch that first coughed up the initial primordial Wu ???

haha, not really.

But the amount of Wu-Man sketches I’ve got lying around here is quite big. Almost as big as his ego… yes, THAT big.

:spin:

Whooaa , thanks for showing us your work .
I was thinking that my sketches were messy , but now i found my master  .
And thanks again for giving me the desire to draw back !!! .
It’s time to get the pencil back , yeeeeppppaaaa  .

And here’s a link to some nice PDFs (andrew loomis books) for those who want to learn drawing :

Peace :RocknRoll: .

You are a very talented guy Sago. Awesome stuff.

As for similar compilations, you may want to look in the “Sketchbook” forum over at conceptart.org. Great reference site with lots of awesome drawings and sketches.

Eatpoo.com forums. Not a scat site i swear. There’s a lot of good artists there, but a warning for ANYONE following that link: The people there are… not really mean but they take art very seriously. Don’t post art unless you want people to rip it to shreds with critiques. And make SURE you read the rules before posting cause they take them seriously. Don’t say i didn’t warn ya :stuck_out_tongue:

Another place where some really good artists hang out, Mostly cartoonists but many of them are published.

The sketches / illustrations sections on each are full of this type of stuff. Both sites i check daily. Conceptart.org i used to check daily as well, but for the past year or so it’s gotten so… noisy there.

You might also want to check out http://www.lukehollis.com/
He also puts a ton of sketches on a page, and he’s also got a really neat scribbly way of building up his forms. The gallery links on his site are kind of weird tho… you have to mouse-over the EXACT center of the squares and click to see the images. At least, that’s how it is on my PC. I don’t think it’s meant to be that way, his old site had little thumbnails instead of empty boxes… Maybe a Firefox issue with his site or something. Blah…

Anyway, hope this helps at all… I’m not really positive what it is you’re looking for but if you can’t find it at any of those then i can’t halp you :stuck_out_tongue:

Peace out man and make more of these pages, they’re fun to ‘read’ and just stare at - let your eyes just wander around 'em… me likes

This one shows a lot of franco-belgian influence. Gotlib comes to my mind first
type “gotlib + dingodossiers” on google. Nothing in english sorry… he is mainly known in France and francophone belgium
