MORPG Project Looking for Experienced Modellers

Hey everyone!

My name’s Andrew and my team and I are currently looking for a few talented 3D modellers and animators that can make some low-polygon (but good looking  ) models for our new Multiplayer Online RPG.

Right now alls I can really say is that we have a very powerful game engine running on OpenGL and developed in Java (so it’s cross platform).

Though Java is generally slower than other languages, we have found that the engine we are using tends to avoid this problem.

A unique feature about the game is that users will be able to enter different “dimensions” where the graphics switch from cell-shading to realism.

Anyway, if you’re interested just drop me a line or respond back here! We currently require use of the blender modeller (or another modeller that can export in the MD5 format), so keep that in mind. We’ll want to see some examples of your work and any low-poly models you can make as an example would be a great way onto the team.

Happy modelling!

What, no story-line or model list? Is the engine scratch built or purchased? Who is on your team and what are their qualifications?

What makes this game different or what sets it apart from other MMORPG’s?

Do you have any idea what goes into a game? Especially an RPG?

You have my skills at your service if you can answer these questions.

Wait… I take that back. All I’m doing is feeding the new people false hopes.

Give us every single detail you’ve got that shows us you have spent time and consideration into the overall design of the game. When you post the game design document, I think you will begin to get peoples interest.

-aML

Ah, thankyou.

wspnut: I dont know if you realize this, but EVERYONE WANTS TO MAKE THEIR OWN GAME. EVERYONE has a team, an average idea, and NO WORK COMPLETED.

to get people interested, it’d be a good idea to post some concept art of some description. character designs, landscapes, stories, the more you clarify your vision the better interest you will get.

Let me recap.

It is not a work in progress, until both WORK and PROGRESS has been made.

Haha, it’s alright. I guess I do have a bit more explaining to do.

The project is new. Very new. And still under development. It is extremely conceptual with the exception of the 3D engine we are using.

One of the perks of this is that if a person that wants to model is interested in also contributing to the storyline they will have that opporotunity. We’re not looking to bring people on soley as modellers, but for them to become part of the team that’s building this project.

If you want my personal background in building games: I have been programming for the past 12 years, 4 of the past 12 have been devoted to mastering Java. I have made a ton of games from classic tetris to 3D simulators in various languages. The two developers working with me are a bit newer to 3D programming, but are very skilled. Lastly, the team that is making the 3D engine is working directly with the project so

I have already made a couple of 2D MORPGs and been involved in who-knows-how-many text-based games, but have always had a passion for 3D programming. The only problem is I don’t have the modelling/animating skills to make this a reality.

As with all projects, we plan on starting small and expanding. Model lists will be made dynamically as the project expands, so, no, I cannot currently give you a list of the models. Like I said, any modeller willl be part of the team not a pawn just being told what to do.

As for your first question, the engine is called the “volatile-engine,” custom made by some professional friends of mine. The engine itself will eventually be an open source project, but as of yet it is not released to the public.

The engine takes basic models and applies various bone-animations to them. That way, any character with the same bone structure can have the same animation applied to it without all the tedious modelling and animating for EVERY character.

The engine is designed for higher-end GPU’s and thus will allow us to really stretch the possibilties.

I realize this isn’t what you guys are looking for, but honestly if you don’t have anything besides “you haven’t done anything!” to say… just browse another topic.

I don’t post concepts publically. If they are original… all those people that want to make their game “big” will at least try and collect them as their own.

THAT’S experience talking for you.

Can you post some pictures or links to examples? Just establishing credibility does wonders for a person with ideas.

I’ll get a collection together in the AM and post it up; it’s getting late

To let you know I am making a game I have a small team and we have a good idea and we have work completed. We even have some models in the engine and flyable. https://blenderartists.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=55529&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

dont generalize!

ok…maybe i might join…now tell me what do you need to start with…do you want me to make a low poly model? how low poly? and another thing…i can model and animate but someone else will have to do the 2d textures.

Hey 4go10sol,

I hear you on the textures… I suck at them :stuck_out_tongue:

Low poly basically means as low a poly count as you can get without sacrificing too much quality. Yeah sorry, that’s vague. It really depends on what is being modelled.

During the process we’ll make different quality models for different settings users can choose. Also, more pertinent models like player characters and NPCs will have higher quality models than… say… a crate or a door :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d like to see anything you’ve done in blender. Anyone is free to IM me on AIM, Yahoo or MSN… my info is in my profile.

ok…give me something to do and we’ll see from there if you like it…and than you’ll show me what you’ve done so far…and then we’ll see if we’ll do it or not

ok i’ll try to make a character for ya. here’s what i need you to tell me:
1)type of character (a little about how you want it to look…or just a sketch!)
2)polycount (for example 400-700 faces, because i dont know how powerfull your engine is).

ok. here is a little something that i had created in less than an hour. the problem is that the faces are squares and you probably need triangles (that’s the way most 3d engines are…dunno about the one you are using). i could convert it to triangles but it’ll make it higher in polycount…you can see here how many vertecies each and every version of this dragon takes and tell me which one you prefer (if any at all…) and i will cut it for uvmapping (texturing) and animate it…

hey guys! first actual work on this topic! everyone is welcome to C&C… :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi Andrew,

I’ve always wanted to create my own game but never had the programming skillz.

I’ll try to set up a site showcasing some of my work.

I’m a decent modeller with some UV mapping and armature experience.
You can check my threads on Elysiun to see some of my work.

Andrew

unless that dragon is supposed to be a statue, it’s too blocky. You could use the same poly’s and make it look organic.

tris are usefull for adding details where quads can not. the claws for example are a case for the triangle-shape. otherwise it looks like somebody made a dragon out of stone. but a nice start for low-poly.

Hey wspnut. If everything is serious about this project, I am willing to contribute.

Everything is possible with people that know what they do, just look at Blender development!

I am going to post a model to demonstrate what I can do.

BTW, it is very interesting!

Although i dont have the time to commit to any major group progects i am more than willing to donate a couple models…

Here is a dragon i have in the works… the modeling is done and textures are on their way… most likely done by christmas.

275 pollys… all tris so it should be compatible with whatever engine you are using… I can see if i cant get rid of a few more tris to save yah some system resources…so let me know what yah think… good luck with this project…

Have a look at some undeads corpse I just did:

Tell me what you think!

These posts are so funny.

What is even funnier, is when they die…

This is like #456 Imma make a mmorpg post for the year, can we break 500 before the year is out!!! I think we caaaan!

EDIT

I was taking a poo and I had a good Idea!! I am going to make a MMORPG!! I dont know how to program, can you guyses do all my models for me. Oh yeah, I have no story or theme So make what ever you want. umm…Oh I need like some one to texture it too. and ummmm lets see…ohhhh yeah, I want everyone to post images of low poly characters so I can see if you suck. and…hmm…what am I forgetting. Oh yeah! I dont know anything about blender! So are we clear. A mmorpg where you can ride a dragon or a Audi TT, its based in london but you can travel to Narnia thru a magic wardrobe, but Narnia is actualy a Ailen planet, Oh yeah you can do spells and have a laser gun! how cool…

Ok im done…DIE DIE DIE
