I have been working on getting realistic terrain,…here are some mountains
C&C?
Looks nice, but doesn’t really seem like any mountains that I’ve seen before. Less ridges and higher peaks maybe? I really like your textures though. There may be some pretty realistic heightmap generators out there, I’ve never actually looked . Good job!
The mesh was generated by terragen. I just gave it some UV texturing.
sweet! some texture problems, but amazing!! mind passing me the .blend??
Sorry the mesh is too huge.
how many verts??
I didn’t check, but the mesh is 10 megs as a DXF.
wow… how can ur computer handle that???
few Q’s
-what was the render time?
-can you navigate that quickly?
-how long does it take to select the mesh…
-how far are you along on that UV mapping tut?
read my post count, it says SO CLOSE! woo (no more monkey for 1 post lol)

–render time was pretty quick
–yep
–it’s a little slow to edit
–I have not gotten back to the tut yet, but I am thinking about dividing it into multiple parts, and making it longer, so it may be awhile.
I think it looks pretty good. I haven’t had much luck with landscapes yet. I really like the texturing so far, it looks very soft.
Looks like it’s time to break out the skis. The lighting is very nice…
I’m not sure which I like better. Maybe I should have put it in WIP. %|
Great colour and excellent lighting.
The texture might need some work, purely because you have some parts of the landscape which are close to the camera. I am assuming the texture is not in a very hight resolution, thus the bluring on the bottom right of the image.
Other than that it’s great. You could also try adding some mist so that the mountain ridge which is farthest away at the right side of the picture seems misty. This might make it even more atmospheric and moody.
Blend on!

hey modron… those mountains look pretty good… the only thing I would do is put some fog in to help make it look bigger!
oops … posted my first comment just after your update.
I think the texture in the second one looks more interesting - more rocky and rugged. The point I mentioned about the bluring at the bottom right still holds.
And, you have actually managed to improve the lighting. Bravo!
The new lighting adds more form to the landscape, especially the mountains at the back.
Good work.
Thanks, I think the background looks better too. Maybe I’ll do a flythrough, with some little trees and humans.
wow, cool, much better, it looks like you found the nor button this time, i think maybe you should add a few sharp edges here and there for a more realistic feel
hmmm… I like the rocky bits of the new texture, but the snow on the first was better. Maybe you should combine them?

actually, there is very little nor on that tex. It is a combination of 3 tilable textures that I made with reptile. A bit of nor, but not much. I think most of the effect is actually brought about by the color of the tileable textures. Each one is repeated once more than the last, so there is quite a bit of variance from one region to the next.
Here’s a zip I put together of a whole bunch of tilables, including the ones I used for the mountains. They are mostly of the bump map variety. All made using reptile.
