My first “real” finished project in Blender. A very simple scene, starring an old-school 2-button mouse. It’s not photoreal, but I tried my best. :-?
Mouse was created using SSD. Mouse cord is a mesh circle extrusion with “set smooth”. Time spent: 3 hours, mostly because I kept screwing up the creases in the SSD.
Rendered using the new Yafray plug-in interface (thanks Jandro and Luis!).
Problem: The mouse cord has a weird rendering artifact – blackish grey streaks down the side. I don’t know what’s going on with that.
I like it! The artifacts on the cord are creating by smoothing the cord as well as subsurfacing it. Simply go into edit mode, select all of the verts (‘a’ until they’re all lit, though I assume you know that) then hit ‘ctrl-n’ which will recalculate the normals and fix the artifacts. As far as the rest of the scene, maybe consider putting the mouse on a mildly reflective surface - with or without the wavy black texture, if with then with it turned way down - that somehow makes things look a bit more real. I dunno. Try it out. (raymir perhaps .25, maybe a bit of fresnel). Keep it up. I like.
The artifact on the cord is actually an artifact. The texture on the cord has only very small reflection value, and no raytraced mirror reflection. I’ve tried recalculating normals, but that didn’t work. Still streaky, almost as if it’s been folded or twisted along the axis. I’ll try to remodel it using a curve, but I have to learn how to do that first.
Good work. If I understand correctly where you mean is the aircraft, it’s just due to reflection, try turning it off. Or it also might be due to modeling. Can we see a wireframe?
But why on Tim Burtons planet of the apes would you render in yafray such a simple scene? I’d just turn on AO, make some better materials and render in blender internal.
Here’s a new render and a screenie of the cord mesh. I reworked the floor texture and lighting. I also remodelled the cord (same method as before), but the streaks remain.
Okay, I was bewildered by the cord quandry, so I decided to blend it, but I’m afraid I did not get any odd streaks. I actually didn’t even have to recalc the normals. It makes me wonder if it has to do with a texture that you might have on it, or perhaps some wierd artifact from the floor texture.
buttens arent aligned properly with eachoter (one is lower), it’s untextured.
Ah, but the buttons are aligned, and it is textured. But the creases at the rear of the buttons are of uneven depth, which might be part of the reason why you think the buttons aren’t aligned properly. Thanks for the comment, I’ll try to fix it up somewhat.

Well, the streaks are there with different floor textures, so if it is a texture problem, it’s probably the texture on the cord. Thanks for the diagnosis, I will keep looking into it.
