Tab into editmode on cone. Select the vertex at the tip of the cone. Hit SHIFT+S and choose ‘curs->sel’. Tab out of editmode. Click editbutton marked ‘centre cursor’. Done.
unfortunately i need to be able to do it without the cone being deformed. i have this cone set up to swing when one key is pressed or wave if another one is pressed. so if i fix it this way for the swinging then i’ll end up with the same problem for the waving.
i guess what i need would be a way to snap the cursor to the selection (anchor point to tip) and not vice versa.
You can change the point of origin to any place you put the curser. In the edit window check the orange buttons furthest to the right. ‘Center Cursor’ will allow you to do this and you can move the cursor as the previous response has said. You may want to do this if you always want to use this point as origin. Or, just follow the previous advice and use the cursor as the pivot point only when you need to, see buttons right below 3D window - the ‘rotating/scaling’ choices are between the ‘Zoom View’ and ‘Edit Mode’ buttons.

that first option had the same issues as the other (i.e. origin changes affected entire animation) but the last option worked well after i changed the curves to linear in the ipo window.
