hi, ive been searching for this for quite a while…
is there a way to transform only object origin manually? i know i can enter edit mode and transform faces etc, but id like to transform only object origin by hand, while my geometry stays in place.
i really need to do this this way, since my objects are aligned the way i like and i just need to rotate them along specified axis.
so, is it possible to rotate object origin (and move it by hand a bit) without affecting or moving geometry itself?
thanks
There is a little button that is next to the 3d pivot point , says Manipulate object centers only, but I don’t get it working… I usually snap cursor to vertex in edit mode and then use origin to cursor.
You have three choices for how to place the origin by either using the “Origin” button in the tool shelf in 2.5x or pressing Shift+Ctrl+Alt+C. The options are pictured below
The first option will snap the object to the origin of that object. Sometimes this is helpful when you have moved away from the origin while working in edit mode.
The second option will snap the origin to the center of the geometry.
The third option is more versatile in that it will snap the object origin to the 3D cursor.
Using this in conjunction with the cursor snap menu (Shift+S) you can place origins nearly anywhere accurately, say for example a certain vertex.
@Craig
manipulate object centers only works for group of objects - if you have selected couple objects and scale or rotate you will only affect their origin positions and wont transform (scale or rotate) objects themselves
@ajm
yes, im aware of these tools, and i might use “origin to 3d cursor”, but how do i rotate origin? (so the local orientation of the object would be rotated, while geometry stays in place)
here’s my problem
id like to rotate object orientation (origin) like on the right example, how do i do that?

Decide to what degree that is while in object mode, then use that degree in edit mode to move the mesh to that same degree?
the problem is, that if you have to do it in 3 axis its really annoying
so there is no way to manipulate origin directly?
I don’t understand I guess… but I suppose a work around would be to use a copy rotation constraint to a bone, and then you could manipulate the bone to get it where you want it, then apply the rotation of your object. Guess that isn’t easy either.
well, i already aligned my objects the way you suggested, but what i would like to see is to have some kind of “manual origin manipulation mode”, where you could manipulate only origin, the very same way you can manipulate objects (so you could grab and rotate it manually, just like objects, but wihtout affecting geometry - and it would change origin rotation for example, which would effect in different object orientation without actually affecting geometry of taht object in any way)
well, anyway - if there was mode like this, it would be huge time saver in some cases. (or maybe there is, and im missing something )
Not that I am aware of - but there has been talk of making the 3d cursor like that, manipulatable with the widget. If it is possible, it would be the right time for someone to pop in and say so.
yes, it would be good feature as well
Hopeing this explains it
Add a Plane in top view,enable Axis in draw type window.Shift object centre to a vertice and delete two vertices leaving you with just one edge with the objects Origin/Pivot at one end.Move the line in object mode so the origin is where you wish,rotate it to your desired angles then (Ctrl + J) the object you wish to have this Location & Rotation to it, then delete remaining edge of the plane.Rename Object and Mesh Job Done!
Just download my Blend file
http://www.blendswap.com/3D-models/misc-objects/nice-3d-model-created-in-blender/
It has 90 Degree complete Rotation but it is showing that its rotating 360 degree. Carefully study IPO curve and you understand.

Not only is the rotation and translation of origins a great tool to use (as other applications has this) but the ability to rotate images and textures as well is very awesome.
exactly, as a 3dsmax child i really miss this (and few others) functionality when modelling in blender (which i find actually more intuitive and faster once you give it a try, even without some modelling tools max has)
