Moving/Copying Part of a Mesh to New Layer?

After trying several different things, searching through the hotkey list, and searched the forums, but I can’t seem to find how to move/copy a part of an object from one layer to another. Help? :o

Shift+D makes a copy of the selected vertices, edges, etc.
P will open a Separation menu. Select ‘Selection’ to separate the selected mesh from the original.
Go to Object Mode
Press M to move the new object to another level

If part of the purpose of moving part of an object to a different layer (remember objects are the most coarse grained things) is to hide the complexity while editing, consider hiding vertices/faces while in edit mode.
