Moving objects between layer 2.56b

Hi everyone. Some months ago I started use blender.
After a while I bought the book “Mastering Blender” but then after 2.56 came out and I were very interested in it. The huge problem is that the huge UI overhaul gives a few problems.
My major one is how to move a object between layers in object mode, anyone know how in 2.56b? :confused:

it should be the “m” key, then select which layer you would like to send it to. you can select which layer you are viewing by selecting its corresponding number.
