Moving objects in object mode

I am very new to Blender, after spending several years in Maya, and I find some things very confusing. Trying (for the fourth time) to take the time to learn this software, so please be gentle.

I understand that if I have an object, and I create a new object in Edit mode, they will join.

I have two objects (cube and sphere) created in Object mode. As I was trying to align the objects (still in object mode) I barely touched them to see how they would look together. Now, when I went to adjust the placement of the sphere in the side view, the cube moved as well, but disproportionately in distance. However, if I placed the sphere more than just a little into the cube, the objects became completely joined.
Once I deselected all objects and attempted to move them apart, the objects were auto-combined together. I was unable to break them apart and had to undo the moves and attempt to see what I had done incorrectly.

First, is this a sticky setting which I can disable? It is incredibly infuriating that the moment any object touches another, I now have one object.

Secondly, is the only way to break the objects apart once auto-joined is by splitting the vertices as described in the thread below?

I just want all objects to act as individual objects until I decide to combine.

Thank you for your time,
Ormada

press O, to disable the ‘proportional edit’.

Just some notes, when you are in edit mode, you can only add meshes to the mesh you are editing. This is not really adding new objects and joining them.

If you need to have some structure with compound objects, you may be better by parenting.

Also make sure snapping is off (default shortcut is Shift+Tab)

Thank you for the responses. I am working through tutorials, but this isn’t something that ever comes up in them.

Secrop, if I understand what your note correctly, if I am in edit mode with one object and it isn’t selected, if I create a new mesh, it is assuming that I am adding that new mesh to the existing object?

In which case, if I need to add another object, I need to switch back to Object Mode, then add new mesh?

Again, thank you for your explanations.

It’s quite common to accidentally turn on/off proportional edit (either by clicking the icon or the shortcut)… New users normally don’t identify the reason why some operator gives unexpected results, but when dealing with object transformations, the first thing to check is the proportional edit, and the ‘center point manipulation’ toggle.

Experiment a bit with those options and you’ll soon be comfortable with them.
