Hi. I have a question about layers in blender. I am modeling a character which consist of the body i modeled as well as a belt. I wanted to move the belt to the second layer and hit M to move it. I clicked the second layer and clicked ok and the belt disappears and it switches to that new layer. I click back to the first layer and it is there. So it didn’t move? Also my body mesh was in all layers so i clicked M move it to the first layer and that seemed to work but then after doing that and trying to move the belt i click back to the first layer and i can’t find my mesh for my body - in any layer. I’m trying to move the objects so i can start on the head in it’s own layer. Can anyone shed some light because i am really confused as to what is going on. thanks for any replies in advance.
First of all, you move objects to different layers. So you need to be in object mode. [You probably know this, I’m just touching all the bases.]
Suppose you have a body and a belt, two separate objects, on layer 1. In the 3d window header, there is a layer visibility button bar with 20 little buttons on it, which ever button is pressed, that layer will be visible. To press more than one button, hold down shift. To select all layers, press the tilde key [to the left of the 1 key on the keyboard, not the numpad.]
Suppose only layer 1 is visible. You select the belt object, type M, then another layer button panel appears with an OK button. This is the move-to-layer panel. Press the 2 layer button and OK, the belt should dissappear. It is now on layer 2 and layer 2 isn’t visible.
In the layer visiblity button panel, press button 2. Don’t hold shift down. Layer 1 should dissappear and layer 2 should appear. So you see the belt but not the body. Press button 1, the body should reappear and the belt dissappear.
If something dissappears from all layers [press tilde and all layers are visible, so everything should be visible] there are two possibilities. First: you accidentally deleted the object. This, of course, is a disaster, and you use disaster recovery methods to deal with it. I’m not going to go into that. The second possibility is that you accidentally hid the object by pressing the h key. In this case, type alt+h and the object will reappear. Make sure you’ve got all layers visible, so you can see it when it becomes “unhidden.”
I’m not sure, but maybe you duplicated it somewhere before you moved it by accident?
otherwise u might just be viewing more than 1 layer in which case… just view one…
thanks for the replies. I haven’t checked back because I’ve been sick. Pressing the tilde button the body reappeared. I don’t like how the objects viewed depending on the layer only occur to the selected object. I don’t know if that how it is suppose to work but my belt is on layer 2 but it shows up on every layer unless i have it highlighted. That is how i lost the body. I made it not visible by switching a layer and then selected the belt and because it wasn’t visible i couldn’t select the body again and had to press the tilde button. Is there any user preference to change how that works? It seems clumsy to me and if im getting tripped up with two objects in a simple scene i couldn’t imagine a complex scene.
