multi materials

in doing multi materials
like the mushroom in the blender manual how do you get rid of extra materials you create by accident
just deleting them doesnt remove them fro the material textfield
or the outlier blocks

can you?

I think you need to save and restart blender for the unused stuff to be gone.

Nope.

You need to ‘Unlink’ them (materials and/or textures) so that they have a 0 in front of their names in the datablock menu. If you hit the X and they are not unlinked then they have more than one user. You need to find those users (Outliner) then click the 2 (or whatever number) in the datablock and confirm the “Make Single User?” message. Once they all have a 0 you can save and reopen Ctrl-W, Ctrl-O, and they will be dropped.

Everything in Blender has a “use count.” As long as anything in the model refers to it, it won’t be deleted. When the use-count reaches zero, it’s subject to removal when the file is next saved. (That is, it won’t be saved.)

Some objects have a “fake user,” which simply means that the use-count is initialized at 1; it never becomes zero, so the object is never deleted.

thanks for all the replies…

yes reopening it does eliminate the unused ones …i had made them single user

ill check out flighs% method too

Do it? It must be a new feuture then. I can’t remember like this. I remember evey god damn no-user materials I had when I was noob.

it’s always been like this since i’ve been using it, and thats been 5-6 years
