Multiple Material/Textures in one object

Hi, I’m Sy (where’s the place for introductions?)

I’m still very new at this, but I’ve started a thing-a-day type workflow to learn (no matter how bad). And today I’ve made an electric guitar based on mine, and I’m at the point where I’d like to put little fret dots on each fret.

Here are some pics

What the guitar sorta looks like: http://www.dv247.com/assets/products/52155_l.jpg

I made this guitar through making various pieces and putting them together, so the object I’m focused on now is the “neck”

So in the edit mode of “neck” I’ve merged all the faces so that each face is one fret-area. And then I made a PNG of a white dot, which I figured I could apply to the material currently being used for each fret. (Save for the 12th, which has 2)

But it’s not working like that, and I don’t know what to do now, which brings me here! Hi

I get the feeling I’ll be here a lot more often :stuck_out_tongue:

If you are simply trying to use different materials for one object, you can assign materials per face to selected faces in edit mode from the materials tab (using the assign button there; after adding different materials; e.g. with the “plus” button). But if you want to use textures efficiently, I recommend you first have a look at some texturing turorials, as you need to unwrapp your guitar object properly and then create / use a texture on it. Alternatively you can try to texture paint on the object (but I also recommend to look at some tutorials for that first). Good place to look are cgcookie.com or blenderguru in my mind.
