Multiple skeletons / bones in a 3D human model, possible?

Hope the title is clear enough

I have a question for you which is troubling me for some time now. Where I work we need to make a 3D model of a human within quite a short amount of time. Since I am fairly inexperienced at that area of modeling, we have been contacting another company who will be providing us with the needed models and animations. But there is one strange thing that’s troubling me.

They ask for a certain amount of money for the base model, which is quite a lot imho. (No need for exact details at this point). But the thing is, they say the price is so high, because they work with multiple skeletons in 1 model. IE: one skeleton (rigging) for all the basic animations, like walking, and 1 skeleton for all the finer animations.

But here is my trouble, they are asking for quite a lot of money, but the way he said it was not really convincing. To be truthful, I think they are making this one up to ask more. What are your thoughts on this matter? Is it really necessary / even possible to work with multiple skeletons in 1 model?

If you need more information, please ask, thanks in advance for thinking with me on this one.

Yes you can have as many armatures/skeletons assigned to a single mesh as you want .

… If time and money are at issue you might want to do a search for MakeHuman here . It’s a free finished human mesh, male and female, though it is not rigged … I vaguely remeber someone did a rigging the MakeHuman mesh tutorial . The actual skinning is very easy to do in the current version of Blender … Though for very sophisticated rigging you would need some advanced techniques … which by the very nature of your question you don’t seem to know … A good rig can make your life a lot easier when animating .

blendrig 2.0 will be comming out soon. when it does you can download it here: http://www.jpbouza.com.ar/ENG/downloads.html

First of all I want to thank you Vertex Pusher and rdo3 for your replies!

@Vertex Pusher: I know the fundamentals about rigging, just got my own copy of “Introducing Character Animation with Blender”, but I still have to put that theory in real life. Thank you for the make human suggestion, I am downloading it as we speak, so I will have something to do this evening

@rdo3, blendrig sounds really promising, will be looking for that one, and downloading make human as we speak, thanks for the links
