multiple texture images on the same mesh?

I’ve been using Blender for about two objects now, lol, (ginger bread man and a sword from the manual), but I have been reading the manual.
I can’t find the info on how to add two textures to the same thing/object.

I have this handle of a sword that is its own object (don’t know how to join objects into one either, tryed boolean-union- turned out bad and incompleat). I want to select some faces and add a picture texture to them with the rest of the faces textured by another picture, all on the same object-mesh.

Thank You for any sugestions or instructions you can give.

To make two objects into one, select them both and hit Ctrl+J.

For multiple materials on one object, see this tutorial: http://feeblemind.homeip.net/dotclear/index.php/2004/12/21/5-blender-indices-materiau---material-indice

Some Guy, thank you very much. this helps a lot.
