can i add textures to a multipule of objects. I have 5 or 6 objects all need the same texture but when i try to add texture as a batch it wont work

If the objects need the same material, apply it to one object and link it to all the other selected objects with Ctrl+L

thats not working for me, i get a menu with choices like link objects, object data, materials and so on but it wont work. Can y explain more wat i need to do
